How to check out any Sacramento employer before you say yes

How to check out any Sacramento employer before you say yes

Every year, people in this region accept roles at companies they never checked, and a few of them regret it. The checking takes about twenty minutes. Here is the version we would give a friend, and yes, you should run it on us too.

Confirm the company legally exists

California publishes this. Search the Secretary of State's business search for the company name and you will see whether the entity is registered, when it was formed, and whether it is currently active. It is free and it takes a minute. A company that cannot be found there is worth a much closer look.

Check the address is a real place

Put the address into a map and look at the street view. Is it an office, or a mailbox in a shipping store? Ask to be interviewed there. A company that will only meet you at a coffee shop, when it claims to have an office nearby, has told you something without meaning to.

Look for people, not just a brand

Real companies have staff who exist elsewhere on the internet. Look up the leadership by name. Look at whether employees list the company on their own profiles. A business with a polished website and no findable humans is worth pausing on.

Read everything, including the bad

Search the company name and read what comes back, including the critical results. Then weigh it properly. A first-hand account from someone who worked somewhere is real information. An anonymous claim stated as fact, with no detail behind it, is worth less, and a single review of any kind is worth less than a pattern. Look for the pattern, and notice whether the company responds to criticism like an adult.

Ask the questions that are hard to dodge

Who would I report to, and can I meet them. What does the day actually look like, hour by hour. What happened to the person who had this role before. How is my compensation structured for this specific position, in writing. Where exactly would I be working. Vague answers to specific questions are the single most useful signal you will get.

Take the offer away and read it cold

Never sign in the room. Take the written offer home, read it when you are not being watched, and compare it to what you were told out loud. If those two things disagree, the paper is the truth, and you should ask why they differ before you do anything else.

None of this is cynical. It is just due diligence, and good employers are glad when candidates do it, because the people who check are usually the people who stay. If you want to run this list on us, our office is at 2880 Sunrise Blvd, Suite 200 in Rancho Cordova and the number is (916) 530-2411.
