In late July, the Synergize team traveled to Dallas for a national leadership conference, a few days of workshops, panels, and hallway conversations with teams from markets across the country. It is easy for a trip like that to produce nothing but photos and a nice dinner. We went with a rule: come home with a full notebook and a short list of things we will actually change. This is the honest version of what we brought back.
The value of rooms full of strangers
The most useful conversations of the weekend did not happen in the sessions. They happened in the lobby, between six people from different markets who turned out to be running into the same problems. That is the real argument for getting out of your own office. Somebody in that circle has already solved the thing you are stuck on, and people in this business are surprisingly happy to tell you exactly how they did it. We left with a list of contacts we will actually use, not just follow.
Habits worth stealing
Every strong team we met had one habit worth taking home. Some run tighter morning meetings than we do. Some are better at recognizing people in the moment instead of saving it for an awards night. We wrote those down not as inspiration but as assignments, and a few of them are already showing up in how we run our week at the Rancho Cordova office.
A room full of people who want to be there
The thing you cannot photograph is the energy of a ballroom where every person chose to spend a weekend getting better at their work. Our founder, Kevin Swimmer, builds our own team around that same trait: people who actually want to be in the room. Seeing it at national scale was a reminder that culture is not a poster on the wall. It is what the room feels like when nobody is making anyone be there.
The short list
A full notebook is only worth the two or three things that survive the flight home. Ours: run recognition weekly instead of quarterly, tighten the morning meeting to what actually moves the day, and keep in touch with the markets we met so the next good idea does not have to wait for the next conference. That short list is the only real measure of whether a trip like this was worth it, and this one was.
